Arviat, Nunavut, is facing a severe blizzard today, March 9, 2026, as high winds and heavy blowing snow create dangerous conditions across the community.
According to Environment Canada, northwest winds are reaching gusts of 60 kilometres per hour. These winds are expected to cause very poor visibility throughout the morning and afternoon, making it difficult to see while outdoors or driving.
The weather agency reports that temperatures in the mid-minus 30s will feel like minus 57 with the wind chill. These extreme conditions can cause frostbite in a very short amount of time, and residents are being told to limit their time outside to stay safe.
Officials advise anyone in the area to avoid travel if possible. If you become lost or stuck in the snow during the storm, you should stay where you are and wait for the weather to improve before trying to move.
