Arviat, Nunavut is in for a stretch of mild and mostly sunny weather this week, with Environment Canada forecasting daytime highs well above the norm for late June.
Starting Monday, June 22, residents can expect mainly sunny conditions and a high of 17°C. The UV index will reach 6, which is considered high, meaning sun protection is a good idea for anyone spending time outside. Tuesday will stay sunny with a high of 16°C and another high UV reading. By Saturday, the temperature could climb to 22°C under a mix of sun and cloud.
These temperatures are a big jump from the usual June averages in Arviat. Typically, the community sees a daytime high of just 8.3°C and an overnight low of 1.3°C. The warm spell, combined with nearly 20 hours of daylight this time of year, offers a great opportunity for outdoor activities.
The long hours of sunshine, however, also mean a higher risk of sunburn. In Nunavut, May and June bring a UV index of 6 and a burn time of around 25 minutes. Even with cooler air, the sun’s rays can be strong, so using sunscreen, wearing a hat, and finding shade are all smart moves.
The forecast from Environment Canada calls for the sunny pattern to hold through much of the week, with overnight lows dipping to around 5°C. It’s a welcome change for the hamlet of about 2,800 people, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the brief but beautiful Arctic summer.
