A major infrastructure project in Blackfalds has reached completion well ahead of schedule and under budget. The Northwest Storm Area Linear Wetland, which manages stormwater for more than 500 hectares of land in the northwest part of the town, was substantially finished in December 2025.
The project, which saw Northside Construction Partnership begin work after being awarded the contract in April 2025, ended with a surplus of $600,748.70 from its original $6.2 million budget. The system is designed to manage water runoff responsibly while protecting environmentally sensitive areas downstream within the Battle River Watershed. Its completion follows nearly a decade of planning, regulatory reviews, and environmental appeals.
During their meeting on April 20, 2026, the Town of Blackfalds Council will review a proposal to use a portion of the construction contingency funds for community enhancements. The plan suggests using $508,380 to add naturalized vegetation, trees, public parking, and a new walking path that will connect the wetland area to Kuhnen Park.
The project, which secured approval from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, ensures that the town can continue to manage development in the area while maintaining environmental standards for local water courses.
