Bonnyville’s Canada Day fun is heading indoors this year. The Town is moving its Party in the Park from Little Leap Park to the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre because of rainy weather and high water levels. The celebration will now be called Party at the C2, and most of the day’s activities will still go ahead, just under a roof.
Town officials made the call out of an abundance of caution. They want everyone to stay safe and comfortable while enjoying the holiday. The pancake breakfast and opening ceremonies will take place in the morning as scheduled, and the Canada Day Parade will follow at 3 p.m. in its usual location. After that, the action shifts to the C2 at 4313 50 Avenue starting at 5 p.m.
Inside the C2, families can check out the Bonnyville Farmer’s Market, food trucks, beer gardens, and children’s entertainment. The Balloon Man will be there for the kids, too. Later in the evening, classic Canadian rock takes the stage. Prism goes on at 8 p.m., and Streetheart follows at 9:45. The C2’s regular services will be closed during the day for the holiday.
The fireworks display is still set for dusk at the C2, as long as the weather allows. Environment Canada has warned of heavy rain across Alberta this June, with some areas seeing over 100 millimetres and ongoing flood concerns. The C2 opened in 2007 as a $25 million project between the Town, the Municipal District of Bonnyville, and the Bonnyville Agricultural Society. It’s a key spot for community events, and this year it will give residents a dry place to mark Canada’s birthday together.
